Re-post: Darkness

Darkness Is Very Special

This image has been posted here before. But now is the season of the year when it gets really, really dark. At least up here in The North. For me this time of year yields more interesting photography. And a special challenge: what to photograph when there is very little light.

At night it gets dark. Especially during winter.

La Bella Montepagano

Longing to go back to Montepagano

It is an absolute gem. That is why we picked to buy our own joint there. It is not only the view. Not only the old town. It is also the people. Abruzzians are are friendly and gentle. Simple as that. You should visit too.

After The Rain – At The Beach In Abruzzo

Steps on the beach

After a day of hefty rains the next day is sunny and warm, making the sand dry up with a uniform crust on the top it. Another day on the beach of Roseto degli Abruzzi

A Giant Step – A Day At The Beach

A giant failure for mankind…

Or what else could we say? Did a giant walk here? Looks like a very long step, from someone with very long legs. Just stepped out of his slippers. Or slipped out? More likely the slipped away in the tide though. And were washed ashore again. Now they are trash.

Alps – Magic Light

Magic Light while driving through the Swiss Alps

It had been raining, and was getting dark. Magic light just before night. For a moment, before darkness reigns.

Roseto to Ancona

On the train – Roseto to Ancona

Traveling by train gives you time to think. To browse through the window. Look and see. And not be seen.

L’Aquila – Earthquake Damage

What L’Aquila Looks Like Today

On April 6th 1999 L’Aquila was struck by a devastating earthquake. About 65.000 people became homeless and 308 people were killed. Today the city is still being rebuilt. Work has been going on for the years since the earthquake, with stabilizing damaged buildings the main priority the first years. The bracing can be seen on most of the old buildings in the central parts of town. A lot of work has been done with mostly landmark buildings and some are even finished, but 90% of all work is still remaining to be done. The pace is crippled by both lack of money (many house-owners were not properly insured, and a lot of other were not covered due to force majeure while some just awaits government funding) and laborers skilled to work with earthquake-damaged old buildings. #laquila #earthquake #abruzzo

Missing the beach – Abruzzo Summer

The Beach

Abruzzo has great beaches. And many easily accessed even if you are not a member of a beach-club. Also less trash (garbage) on public beaches than on the western coasts on Italy. And the water is warmer. So don’t judge the Abruzzi beaches by my picture. Those cans are actually used by people to throw their trash in. here Italians are well-mannered.

Roseto: with love – Ep02

Roseto in July.” The Calm” before the storm.

Oh yeah. Don’t let yourself be fooled. Roseto is a great place for a beach holiday. ay better than all those that you have heard of. My images show the kind of decay, dents, mishaps etc that makes places like Roseto feel OK, human and alive. Perfect does not make perfect. And also; many of the things that are not perfect are not the fault of the people here. here might be things drifting in from the Adriatic Sea. Careless sailors that have thrown things overboard. Mobsters across the sea that dump their contracted garbage in a lagoon instead of having it burnt at the garbage-incinery. And of course there are some of the owners of the much wanted beach-clubs that are just in it for a quick buck. Not many, but a few… the season is short.

Of course Commune di Roseto degli Abruzzi takes managing waste seriously.

A little bit of Roseto degli Abruzzo – Ep01

Welcome to Roseto

Most of the year Roseto Degli Abruzzo stays dormant like  a tundra mouse hibernating until the brief summer. Roseto wakes during July to explode during August and the fade back to sleep during September. Now it’s July.

Yopu could say the season is short by the Adriatic sea. At least for business.
